Snakebites in Domestic Animals an Overview

PC: Authors
India possesses around 10 % of total snake population of the world. The deadliest families include – vipers, elapids, cotalids and colubrid. The big four species i.e. Russels Vipers, Indian Krait, Spectacled Cobra (Indiancobra) and Saw Scaled Viper are the major killers of domestic animals. Snakebites are more common in grazing animals like cattle, sheep and goats. Snakes prefer habitat or locations like agricultural landscape with abundant rodents, water, plant density and holes. Man made buildings and other structures like barns and mange filled with fodders also make ideal hiding and hunting grounds for snakes (Joshi, 2018).
